NBA BWARI 2023; WHY I WANT TO BE THE VICE CHAIRMAN OF NBA BWARI- CHIDI DIMGBA
CHIDI JUDE DIMGBA
Vice Chairmanship Candidate for NBA Bwari Branch (Cradle Bar)
INTRODUCTION
The Office of the Vice Chairman of NBA Bwari Branch (Cradle Bar) is a sensitive and important one in the scheme of things towards the development of the Branch and the attainment of the objectives of the Nigerian Bar Association at the national level.
The Office needs someone who is compassionate and keenly passionate in promoting the cause of justice and the rule of law, as they particularly concern the welfare of members of the Branch and of the profession as a whole.
A person with proven records of human rights’ activities, particularly on human right cases prosecuted pro bono publico (in the interest of the public) is best suitable for the position of the Vice Chairman of this noble Branch of the NBA.
Cradle Bar has tremendously gained a noble place of prominence in the comity of Branches of the NBA across the country. As such, the Vice Chairman of our highly-esteemed Branch must essentially be someone who has unflinching support for, and adds immense value to, the Chairman and the Executive Council of the Branch in the discharge of their duties and in sustaining and promoting the gains of Cradle Bar over recent years.
It will be an honour for me to serve the Cradle Bar as the Vice Chairman of the Branch, as I am convincingly aware that I possess the necessary qualities to serve in this capacity.
MY AGENDA
1. Organise and carry out partnership visits to human right agencies –NHRC, NAPTIC, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Police Command, etc.
2. Strengthen collaboration efforts with human right agencies and non-governmental organisations on human right issues and necessary interventions.
3. Apply to heads of Court for assignment of cases to be handled by the Human Rights’ Committee of NBA Bwari for indigent defendants pro bono publico.
4. Engage members of the Branch in carrying out pro bono services that touch on human rights.
5. Reward members of NBA Bwari Branch who provide legal services on a pro bono basis.
6. Organise legal clinics for the benefit of members of the society on human right affairs.
7. Work closely with the Police Duty Solicitors’ Scheme Committee towards the enforcement of the provisions of the ACJA, 2015, as they affect detention of suspects in police custody.
8. Organise seminars on Human Rights in collaboration with agencies, non-governmental organisations and partners with NBA Bwari Branch.
9. Consolidate on the outcomes of visits to the Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command, National Human Rights Commission, NAPTIP and Nigeria Police between 2022 and 2023.
10. Identify cases of human right abuses on detainees in detention facilities within the FCT and take necessary steps in mitigating human right infractions.
11. Bring human right solutions closer and make them beneficial to indigent members of the public.
12. Organise mentorship programmes particularly for the benefit of young lawyers of NBA Bwari Branch.
13. Assist the Chairman and members of the Executive Council of the Branch in fostering effective communication with the National Body in terms of human right matters and necessary interventions.
14. Assist the Chairman of the Branch in the discharge of his official duties towards members of the Branch and matters incidental to his office.
15. Defend the honour of NBA Bwari Branch and the Nigerian Bar as a whole towards their best interest.
HUMAN RIGHT EXPERIENCE
As the Secretary of the Human Rights’ Committee, NBA Bwari Branch (2021-present), I have used my office and influence to secure access for the Branch to all inmates at the correctional centres under the FCT Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service for the purposes of providing free legal services to the inmates at those correctional centres.
There was synergy of efforts and positive collaborative results between the Human Rights’ Committee and the Police Duty Solicitors’ Committee (PDSS). I have been serving as the Chairman of the PDSS Committee (2022-present) and have set up sustainable structures for the smooth development of the above committees for the overall interest of NBA Bwari Branch.
I am a serving Member, Judiciary Committee, Nigerian Bar Association –NBA National. This gives me the advantage and opportunity to further serve as a link between the Branch and the Nationals in matters of interest to the members of the Branch.
Over the last 8 years, I have managed Legal Access Foundation International, a registered non-governmental organisation that provides free legal services to indigent members of the society with particular interest in prisoners.
As at 5th May, 2023, 729 former prisoners have been lawfully released from prison through the joint efforts of LAFI and its partners across 29 jurisdictions in Nigeria.
The legal services provided to the beneficiaries were completely free and on pro bono basis.
I have also consistently coordinated and worked with an average of 100 lawyers in the last 8 years (and still counting) towards achieving the aims and objectives of LAFI.
Having served as the current Secretary, Human Rights’ Committee and the current Chairman, Police Duty Solicitors’ Scheme Committee, with enriched successes since my appointment into those vital roles in this noble Branch, I dare say that a vote for me is a vote for capacity, credibility and positive results.
Let us work together and make this happen through your vote for me.
